I agree with your assessment of the GOP. (Although I think the Democrats’ abandonment of the working class is but one of many factors in why Trump managed to eke out a win in 2016. Misogyny, for instance, played a huge role.) And as I stated before, I certainly think the Democrats have many flaws and deserve (constructive) criticism.
What I objected to in Ms. Martinchek’s piece was the unrelenting drumbeat of nothing BUT criticism and the woeful lack of balance or perspective in not ever criticizing the Republican Party, or acknowledging that they are far far worse. Needless to say, that imbalance plays into Republican hands. In fact, it’s what they count on.
We can critique the Democratic Party and make it better — and serve our progressive aims — without being useful idiots for Trump. Or, if you wish, go ahead and write it off and seek another path. But focusing solely on attacking the DNC while giving the GOP a pass strikes me as madness, and suicide.
As for Trump winning again, he might. But if you think the Democrats deserve to lose for their sins, what do you think the Republicans deserve for theirs?
