Thank you for your articulate and civilized comment. As I’m sure you’ve experienced, right now much of our political dialogue in this country is mere shouting, so I appreciate your cogent comments, even though we disagree.

That said, General Tata’s comment makes my point, not yours. There is no airtight way to secure a border. A wall can be a component of border security, but it is certainly not the panacea that this administration is selling it as, particularly not as a passive measure without the kind of human and technological assets that Tata himself admits were insufficient.

More to the point, this is not even about the wall. As Trump’s own advisors confessed, the whole idea of a border wall was originally just a mnemonic devised to keep their undisciplined candidate on track. Now, as he futilely attempts to keep this ridiculous and impossible campaign promise, he is using it as a distraction from his other troubles. The border crisis is a made-up problem playing to the nativist and xenophobic impulses of his base. (To wit: Illegal immigration is actually at historic lows, illegal drugs come in mostly through smuggling at legal ports of entry, most undocumented workers are visa over-stayers of whom there are more Canadians than any other group, etc.) There is no crisis except the one Trump and Stephen Miller created with their draconian border policies, which include the barbaric and un-American family separation policy. The wall is sheer demagoguery at its absolute worst.

I’m attaching an essay below that goes into all this in more detail, if that is of any interest.

As to pubic support, comparing Trump’s approval level with that of Congress (dominated by Republicans in both houses until last week, I hasten to note), or even less appropriately, to the press, is apples to oranges. The simple fact is, the majority of the electorate did not vote for Trump in 2016 and the majority of Americans do not support him now, nor his wall, by numbers that are historically bad for a sitting president. He can’t even get enough votes within his own party to pass this measure. This make-believe crisis he has ginned up will only damage him more, and will do nothing to stop the freight train of justice that is inexorably barreling down upon him.

Thank you again for engaging; I appreciate it.
